Term project

The term project for this course is a team project, with a group of 3 to 5 students forming a team. Each team selects a computer-related “free” document written in English and produces detailed analysis, in the form described in the class notes, for all or part of the document, depending on its size. What follows is a list of candidate free documents from which you may choose one as your team project:

1.     How to be a Programmer: A Short, Comprehensive, and Personal Summary

2.     How To Think Like A Computer Scientist: Learning with C++

3.     How to Think Like a Computer Scientist: Learning with Python

4.     How To Think Like A Computer Scientist, Java Version

5.     The CVS Book: Open Source Development with CVS

6.     Knowing Knoppix

7.     GNU Bash Reference Manual

8.     Cygwin User's Guide

9.     Grokking the GIMP

10.  Picking Up Perl

11.  Using Samba

If you find these not to your liking, you may choose other free documents on the Internet, such as the FreeTechBooks.com web site, from which I got the above list in the first place, or http://www.faqs.org/docs/.

Each student is required to post a “sentence a week” assignment on his/her homepage starting next week. Try to pick the most challenging sentence you encounter in a week and analyze it in finer steps as discussed in class. The deadline is midnight of every Wednesday of the week.

If you are not sure where to get your sentence, try a textbook or the ACM TechNews.
