Course Objectives:

Since English is the common language used to communicate technical information in area most branches of science and technology, a student’s English skill, especially the reading ability, is crucial to your success as an information-engineering major. This course is aimed to provide students with simple yet effective techniques to analyze sentence patterns commonly used in textbooks and papers so as to improve their reading comprehension.

 

General Information:

Poor reading comprehension can generally be attributed to a poor vocabulary and a lack of sentence analysis technique. This course is designed to directly help the students on the second difficulty. Specifically, this course consists of four parts: First, a quick review of essential English grammar will be given to warm up the students. Next, we will introduce a simple yet effective method for analyzing English sentences. After the midterm exam, we will use samples found in computer programming II and discrete mathematics in parts 3 and 4 as material to practice on the sentence analysis technique. Also, to help students to correct the problem of poor vocabulary, lists of frequently used words in each course will be provided for the students.
